Best selling cars in Europe

If you travel around Europe you may notice that some countries favour one make and model of car more so than another? In the UK Vauxhall and Ford are our favourite brands, in fact GM uses the Vauxhall brand only in the UK because it has so much history. Japanese manufacturers are starting to climb up the top ten charts now, but they still have a lot to do before they knock the likes of the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus off their perch.

Best sellers in Europe:

1. The legendary VW Golf – in 2010 nearly half a million units were sold making it the most popular car in Europe. The Golf sits on a very high pedestal, many have tried to knock it off but have failed.

2. The evergreen Ford Fiesta – the Fiesta has been around since the 70’s and in 2010 just over 400,000 units were sold. The UK market accounted for 1 in 4 Fiestas sold in Europe – we Brits love the little super mini.

3. VW Polo supermini – the German supermini has been giving the Ford Fiesta a good run for its money and almost beat the total number of sales figure. Just over 350,000 Polo units were sold in Europe.

4. The Renault Clio – a firm favourite in France, the Clio hasn’t done so well in the UK recently but with 338,603 sales in Europe in 2010 it is still much loved by our neighbours.

5. Vauxhall Corsa – another Fiesta rival, last year 318,982 models were sold. Not quite troubling our favourite supermini but if the Fiesta were to slip up the Corsa would eat it up straight away!

I’ve been wanting a VW Golf for a little while now actually and looked at used cars in Scotland, but I can’t afford a newish one at the moment. I still giggle at the “like a Golf” TV adverts that have been airing for the last few months.
